Joy Tanner soda fired pottery

Gallery

The images above are an example of some pieces from 2021 that I made using stoneware clay. My forms are wheel thrown and altered or hand built from slabs of clay. The pots are soda fired to Cone 10 in a gas kiln.  A couple of the images of pots are fired differently in our other wood burning train kiln, such as the darker teapot and oval basket.  All of the work incorporate hand carved patterns and textures enhanced by the atmospheric firing process of soda or wood. I really enjoy all parts of my process, but my favorite stage is when I am at my work table with the leather hard clay, adding handles, spouts, or other details and carving patterns on them. I also greatly enjoy loading the pots into the soda kiln and the anticipation of how they are going to turn out in the firing.  The soda firing itself feels very exciting and engaging to me as well!
